Pink is the order of the day for Customer Service Agent Maykel Guerra and the check-in area at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Alaska Airlines airport employees and flight attendants based in Los Angeles are seeing pink during October to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And they're hoping to spread pink fever across the system this month by offering fellow employees pink ties, scarves and wristbands to wear with their uniforms for a donation.
Sporting pink neckwear, the LAX employees kicked off their month on Oct. 1 with a "Pink Party" — complete with pizza, pink lemonade and information about breast cancer. Customers are being greeted with pink roses and balloons at the counter and gate areas, thanks to the handiwork of Customer Service Agents Aisha Majid-Mhunzi and Joyce Fortt.
"We're going all out to raise awareness and money for a disease that touches so many of us," said Kathy Denker, Los Angeles airport general manager and a breast cancer survivor. Denker recently participated as a volunteer model in the Komen Foundation's 8th annual "Fashion for the Cure" benefit in West Hollywood, featuring clothes by prominent designer Diane Von Furstenberg.
Airport employees will also participate in the Walk of Hope on Oct. 25, a 2k-fundraiser to support breast cancer research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope. Departure Coordinator Silvia DelGadillo organized employees for the effort under the team name "Alaska Airlines Pink Eskimos."
