Horizon Air Bringing 21st Century Approach to Flagstaff on First Day of Service

6/20/2008 9:54 am (PT)

FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ. — Buy a ticket at the airport ticket counter? That's so 20th century. Today people arrange their air travel from the comfort of their own homes via the Web or the telephone at whatever time is most convenient to them. Airport ticket sales have gone the way of the paper ticket.

Reflecting this trend, passengers will be greeted by customer service staff at check-in-only counters for Horizon Air's new service to Los Angeles, which starts Monday.

"For smaller cities in particular, this is the airport of the future," said Dan Russo, Horizon's vice president of marketing and communications. "It reflects current realities as to how customers prefer to obtain their tickets, and it greatly increases efficiency. With ticket sales out of the way, our airport team can fully focus on speeding customers through the check-in and boarding process."

Horizon's check-in counter in Flagstaff will open 90 minutes before a flight until 30 minutes before the flight departs. To ensure an on-time departure, all baggage must be checked no later than 30 minutes before the flight is scheduled to depart.

True trendsetters can take advantage of Horizon's online check-in -- available up to 24 hours in advance of a flight via horizonair.com -- and, if not checking luggage, skip the check-in counter altogether.

Those that find themselves at the airport without a ticket or Web access can step over to the nearest public phone, call 1-800-547-9308 toll free, and purchase a ticket through Horizon's call center (open 5 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week). There is a $15 fee for booking on the phone. Internet booking is free.

Inaugural Festivities

Horizon and Flagstaff government, community partners and businesses will celebrate the inaugural flight Monday with an airport fire department water-cannon salute over the arriving plane, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a presentation to Horizon of the keys to the city by Mayor Sara Presler.

Starting Monday, Horizon will offer two flights a day to LAX from Flagstaff. The flights will both be nonstop until Sept. 8, when the morning flight from Flagstaff will make a brief stop in Prescott and then continue nonstop to Los Angeles. The evening return flight will take the opposite route, stopping briefly in Prescott before terminating in Flagstaff.

Horizon will operate its flights with the Bombardier Q400. This 74/76-seat, high-speed, twin-engine turboprop is one of the most technologically advanced regional aircraft in the world. It's as quiet and comfortable as a jet – thanks to its special technology that suppresses noise and vibration, its generously sized overhead storage bins, its unobstructed under-seat space, and its ample headroom (6 feet, 5 inches). The Q400 is also among the most environmentally friendly aircraft today, burning 30 percent less fuel and producing 30 percent lower emissions than comparable jets.

The inflight service, provided by two flight attendants, will include – at no extra charge – premium Jones Pure Cane Soda, Starbucks coffee, and Northwest wines and microbrews.

Horizon serves 49 cities throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Baja California Sur (Mexico), and British Columbia and Alberta (Canada). Together, Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines serve 92 cities and are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK).
