Winter Season Flights to Kamloops Placed on Hiatus

SEATTLE — With fuel prices remaining at record high levels, Horizon Air has announced it will not be able to offer seasonal flights to Kamloops, B.C., this coming winter. Horizon has provided the flights from Seattle every winter since December 2003.

"Sky high fuel prices. A U.S. economy that's in the doldrums. In this economic environment, we just couldn't see how it would be possible to operate these flights profitably this year," said Dan Russo, vice president of marketing and communications. "I would like to thank the Kamloops Airport, the Kamloops business community and Tourism Sun Peaks for their past support of this service. I hope we can resume these flights in the future once economic conditions improve."

Horizon began winter-only service to Kamloops on Dec. 15, 2003, with the 37-seat Bombardier Q200. In subsequent seasons, Horizon varied the flight times, fares and combinations of aircraft to increase boardings. After announcing its plans to phase out the Q200 from its fleet in 2007, Horizon operated the 76-seat Bombardier Q400 once daily during the 2007/2008 winter.

Horizon's current plans are to transition to an all-Q400 fleet. The Q400 is the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft of its size in the world, burning 30 percent less fuel and producing 30 percent less CO2 than a comparable jet.

Horizon's fleet serves 48 cities throughout Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Baja California Sur (Mexico), and British Columbia and Alberta (Canada). Together, Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines serve 93 cities and are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK).
