What forms must be submitted if I want to attend Initial CARE training?
The CARE registration process is now online! Go to the CARE Training page and follow the instructions. Your supervisor/manager will be notified and will have to submit an acceptance email in order for you to be scheduled for a class.
How is the CARE Team different from the CIRP Team?
The CARE Team is a federally mandated program that was established by Alaska Airlines to provide immediate and short-term support to family and friends impacted by an accident involving one of our aircraft. The CIRP Team is a group of trained volunteers that are able to respond to any abnormally stressful or traumatic incident involving an Alaska or Horizon employee or their family. Employee's participation in both programs is on a voluntary basis. To become a member of the CARE Team, you must obtain supervisor or manager approval.
Is there a minimum service requirement before an employee can become CARE trained?
Yes, we require that employees have been working for Alaska or Horizon for a minimum of six (6) months before they can be trained as a CARE Team member.
Where does the class take place?
Unless otherwise noted, Initial CARE training is usually held in Seattle. However, we do try to schedule training in various outstations whenever possible. If your station would be interested in hosting an initial CARE training please contact someone in the Emergency Preparedness department.
The Emergency Preparedness department is NOT responsible for making hotel accommodations. Alaska Airline employees should coordinate with their manager or supervisor to make their hotel reservations. Horizon Air employees should contact Jan Linder, the hotel coordinator for QX, to make their arrangements. For a list of recommended hotels around the Alaska system please see the Recommended Hotels List on First Class email under Employee Travel Service on your desktop. Horizon Air employees are not allowed to attend training in the state of Alaska, so no hotels will be provided for there.
I am flying in from out of town to attend initial training, how should I list myself?
When making your booking in PET, list yourself as Business - Positive Space (bumpable if oversold).
Yes, lunch will be provided if the class is held in Seattle. If the class is held in a location other than Seattle, lunch will most likely not be provided. Students will be notified in advance if lunch will be provided in a city other than Seattle.
Will I be compensated for my time in class?
Because compensation policies differ from workgroup to workgroup, we recommend that employees speak directly with their supervisors or managers to get the most accurate answer to this question. For a general pay description, please see the pay chart in the links section of the CARE website.
What type of material is covered in class?
During class, you will be introduced to the Family Assistance legislation, Alaska and Horizon's emergency response structure and procedures, and the two roles that CARE Team members will perform during a response. You will also be familiarized with CARE Team procedures, crisis communication, CARE guidelines during a response, self-care techniques, and you will hear survivor testimonies. The class is facilitated by a combination of lecture, group discussion, small group exercises, and role-plays.
What is the appropriate attire for class?
Business casual clothing is recommended but jeans are also considered acceptable. Above all we want employees to be comfortable.
Can I be both CIRP and CARE trained?
Yes, AirGroup employees can be both CIRP and CARE trained. The CIRP training can only help a CARE Team Member during a response. Having the knowledge that comes with being a CIRP member is invaluable to those that will be working around them.
Where should (can) I attend class?
Please attend a class that is located geographically close to your home city. Classes taught in the state of Alaska are specifically for those employees that live in Alaska. Also, classes given in locations other than Seattle are generally tailored for those employees that live in that area or that area is easier to get to for them than Seattle. If Seattle is the nearest city to you and there is is a class in a different city that you would like to attend, please contact Christopher Mears. These situations will be handled on a case by case basis. Please note though that it is a Horizon Air policy that no employee can attend any training class in Alaska.
I am a Flight Attendant, is there anything I need to know before attending initial training?
Alaska Airlines - Flight attendants are paid 6.0 TFP/day for attending initial training. They must attend training on their regularly scheduled day off.
Horizon Air - Contact your supervisor for pay and hotel (if necessary) information.
What is the policy if I work in Reservations ?
There is a stipulation for those of you that work in reservation and want to become part of the CARE program. Reservations agents are not to be used as part of a response for at least 72 hours at the minimum. This is due to the high call volumes. After the 72 hour time period, the CARE Team will check with reservations management to see if it is ok to release agents to assist with CARE duties.
